Her lunch was brought to her on another tray, and she wondered whether this was part of Mrs. Lansdowneâs plan to reduce her to size, as it were. Her work came to an end, and the silence of the room got on her nerves after a time, and shortly after she had finished she made her way out into the sunshine.
The others could not have returned, for there was no one in the lounge when she passed the windows, and she had heard no sound of returning horsesâ hooves. Looking up and around her at the grim peaks that enclosed this desolate house, and the lovely light that was making the most of them at this hour of the day, she thought that under different circumstances such a spot as this might have a powerful kind of romantic charm. It was like building oneself an eyrie to which one could fly when the spirit moved one â which was exactly what Mrs. Lansdowne had had in mind when she first bought the place.
If one was free to come and go as one chose in a place like this â free to ride the mountain paths with someone like Charles at oneâs elbow! To spend the evenings with him in front of the big log fire in the lounge, or share the cosiness of the study with him, and receive his advice about oneâs work!

But although she wandered into several courtyards, each one seeming very similar to the others, and came upon some stable buildings, and an outhouse or two, she never once found a door to the outer world standing open, or even one that yielded to pressure when she tried to force it open. They were immensely strong doors, for one thing, and the locks were new, and in every case the keys were missing. There were little grilles let into the thickness of the timber in some cases, and she had the feeling that while she stood in front of them, perplexed because she really did seem to be a prisoner in the heart of the mountains, eyes were watching her through those grilles, and it was by no means a pleasant sensation.
She gave up trying to find a way out at last, and started to make her way back to the house. And it was as she was rounding an angle of one of the stable buildings that something immensely strong, and muscular, and furry, leapt at her.
âDown, Sulluba!â said a voice which, although it was feminine, had an iron ring of command in it, and the magnificent specimen of a pale cream-coloured Alsatian obeyed her.
Gay felt as
